Philanthropy

In the fall, Lambda Delta Psi sisters have raised awareness and funds in the fight against ovarian cancer to help women and their families impacted by this disease.

Although, our philanthropic efforts don't stop in the fall. We encourage our members to reach out to local non-profits to raise funds and awareness in the spring.

National Philanthropy

OVARIAN CANCER

Ovarian cancer is the #1 cause of death from gynecologic cancers in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimates that roughly 22,000 women are diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer each year, and that more than 15,000 women will perish from it this year.

Lambda Delta Psi has set out to assist those suffering from ovarian cancer by continually promoting awareness of ovarian cancer throughout the local community. Simultaneously, Lambda Delta Psi seeks to raise donations to help research funds for ovarian cancer through events like those hosted during Philanthropy Weeks at our individual colonies. We hope through our actions that one day improved treatments and a possible cure may be found. Currently, Lambda Delta Psi partners up with the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. Find more information on their website: ovarian.org.

What is Ovarian Cancer?

Ovarian cancer is a growth of abnormal malignant cells that begins in the ovaries. Tumors found can either be benign or malignant.  The cancerous tumors can spread either directly to other organs in the pelvis and abdomen or through the bloodstream/lymph nodes to other regions of the body (cited from ovariancancer.org).

The cancerous cells begin in the ovaries. An ovary (two almond shaped organs) are found on each side of the uterus that stores eggs and produces female hormones estrogen and progesterone.

Because of the vague symptoms and shortage of early detection tests, only 19% of cases are found at an early stage. The exact causes of ovarian cancer are not known. The likelihood of developing the disease may be higher if a woman has one or more ovarian cancer risk factors.
